I remember launching a new tool and seeing zero adoption across the stakeholders and intended users.
I had to return to the basics of change management. Emotional intelligence helped me step back from the launch and understand what people needed to move forward.
We needed shared understanding of the problem we were solving, why change was necessary and how the solution would help. We also needed a clear implementation process, training and a timeline.
Then came a dedicated week of support to answer questions and work through challenges.
That experience reminded me that preparing a solution and preparing people require different kinds of attention.
Your leadership strengths can have a shadow
When adoption stalls, leaders may become frustrated, push harder or interpret hesitation as resistance.
Sometimes, the very strength we rely on can get in the way.
Decisiveness can become impatience. A commitment to excellence can become perfectionism. A desire to support others can lead us to avoid necessary conversations.
These are examples of how a leadership strength can show up differently under pressure. Recognizing that shadow gives us an opportunity to choose a more effective response.
Five capabilities for leading change with emotional intelligence
1. Self-awareness
Recognize your reactions when people do not respond as expected. Are you listening to their concerns or defending your solution?
2. Empathy
Explore what the change asks of people. Uncertainty, workload and fear of making mistakes can all affect their readiness.
3. Clear communication
Connect the problem, the why and the solution. Explain the process, training and timeline, then check for understanding.
4. Coaching
Give people opportunities to practice, ask questions and receive feedback as they apply the change.
5. Adaptability
Stay close after launch. Use questions and challenges to improve implementation rather than treating the original plan as fixed.
Start by understanding how you lead
As an engineer, former global corporate leader and executive coach, I have learned that leading change requires attention to both the process and our own behavior.
Before your next launch, ask:
Could the way I naturally lead be creating a barrier I have not recognized?
The Leadprint is a starting point for exploring your leadership archetype and the shadow that could interfere with your ability to lead change with emotional intelligence.
Take your Leadprint and discover your leadership archetype.
For organizations ready to strengthen these capabilities, Elevate Success also offers emotional intelligence training at your location.
